Matches filled with intense action were already evident as early in the Round of 128, when the lower ranked crowd favorite ousted a seeded player. As the tournament continued, outcomes of matches are getting more unpredictable the seeding order was getting disorganized. The top seeds were eventually eliminated. In the end, the 4th seeded Zhang Jike took the title, against all the doubts made about him.
Paris. 2003 World Table Tennis Championships. Quarterfinals. Ma Lin vs Joo Se Hyuk. Extreme attack vs extreme defense. Every point was fought thoroughly. Joo Se Hyuk then ranked at 61st defeated the second seed in the end, provoking the Parisian crowd. Wang Liqin vs Werner Schalger. Against all odds Schlager saved 4 consecutive match points, frustrating Wang Liqin, who lost the final set decisively. The crowd is getting crazier; they can't believe that Chinese were getting eliminated. Only one Chinese made it to the semifinals thanks to an all-Chinese quarterfinal match. Kong Linghui the Grand Slam Champion lost to Schlager, while Joo Se Hyuk slaughtered his respective opponent. No Chinese made it to the final, and surprisingly, it was Europe vs Asia in the final. Two unstoppable players made it to the final, but only one will be crowned World Champion. In an intense match accompanied by the emotional Parisian crowd, Werner Schalger, then already aged 31, took the title in the most miraculous way, defeating one and another Chinese player. No one could have expected that outcome.
